What this sheet is for

Most training logs fill up with sets, reps and distances, leaving recovery as an afterthought. This sheet reverses that priority. Reach for it at the start of any month when you are building a hard training block, returning from injury, or simply trying to understand why your progress has stalled. Recording what happens between workouts is as important as recording the workouts themselves.

How to use it

Write your main recovery aim for the month in the Recovery goal this month box — for example, eight hours of sleep nightly or two full rest days per week. Each numbered line represents one calendar day. In the space provided, note whether that day was a full rest day or active recovery (light walk, mobility work, swim), rate muscle soreness on a 1–5 scale, and log sleep hours. The heavier rules every seven days help you scan each week at a glance. At month end, answer both Month-End Review prompts honestly before starting the next month's sheet.

What is printed on the page

“Rest & Recovery Month Log” is laid out as day list: days 1–31 as two columns of numbered writing lines, a 'focus this month' box at the top and a two-prompt review at the bottom. Under the title it reads “Track rest days, sleep, soreness and active recovery across the month.”, and the line at the foot of the page says “A planned rest day is training. Mark it as deliberately as any hard session.”.

The review prompts slot holds two entries — “Which week did you feel most recovered, and why?” and “What will you change about rest next month?” — so the sheet is already filled in for fitness rather than left as blank rows to label yourself.

The remaining labels on the page are “Month / Year” for the month label, “Recovery goal this month” for the focus prompt, “Rest · active rec. · soreness 1–5 · sleep hrs” for the column hint and “Month-End Review” for the review heading.

Two things about this particular day list are settings rather than text, and “Rest & Recovery Month Log” has them set like this. Review box is on: include the review box at the bottom. Weekly dividers is on (the opposite of the layout's default): draw a heavier rule every seven days.

Tips

Use a simple code — R for full rest, A for active recovery — so each day's line stays readable at a glance.

If soreness stays at 4 or 5 for three consecutive days, note it in that week's margin as a flag for overtraining.

Compare sleep hours against soreness scores weekly; most people find a clear pattern within two to three weeks.

The other layouts in this set

“Rest & Recovery Month Log” is one of three sheets in this set, each a different fixed layout filled for the same topic. “Strength Training Monthly Log” uses the classic month grid layout and “Monthly Cardio Training Calendar” uses the grid with sidebar layout. Pick by how you work: the layout decides how much you write and where, not what the sheet is about.
