Cook From the Fridge Day
A single-day meal planner for cooking from existing fridge, freezer, and pantry stock, built around reducing waste and avoiding an unplanned shop.
The PDF is built on your device from the layout and the text above; nothing is uploaded. If the preview does not display, the download buttons still work.
What this sheet is for
This sheet is for the day you open the fridge and decide to cook only from what is already there — whether you are clearing out before a holiday, managing a tight week, or simply trying to waste less. It keeps you focused on what is perishable, what needs using first, and how to build three satisfying meals without reaching for the phone to order in or driving to the shops.
How to use it
Start by working through the Kitchen Check strip at the bottom — tick each storage area as you look through it so nothing is missed. Then fill in Breakfast and Morning Snack with whatever you find that is quick to prepare and close to its best. Move to Lunch and Afternoon Snack, noting the protein source and any vegetables that are wilting or close to their use-by date. In the Dinner and Evening Snack section, plan your most involved cook, combining what is left. Close the day by answering the reflection prompt — one honest sentence about what you found and how you used it.
What is printed on the page
“Cook From the Fridge Day” is laid out as three sections: three stacked, labelled sections of checkbox lines (e.g. morning, midday, evening), a tick-off tracker strip of eight items and a two-line reflection at the foot. Under the title it reads “Plan today's meals around ingredients already in your kitchen — no shopping needed.”, and the line at the foot of the page says “Check expiry dates first. Anything close to going off moves to the top of your cook list.”.
The section headings slot holds three entries — “Breakfast & Morning Snack”, “Lunch & Afternoon Snack” and “Dinner & Evening Snack” — so the sheet is already filled in for meal planning rather than left as blank rows to label yourself.
The section hints slot holds three entries — “Write what you will make and which perishables it uses up (eggs, fruit, leftover grains).”, “Note the protein and any wilting veg you want to use before they turn.” and “Plan the largest cook here — include sides and what can be saved for tomorrow.” — so the sheet is already filled in for meal planning rather than left as blank rows to label yourself.
The tracker items slot holds eight entries — “Fridge checked”, “Freezer checked”, “Pantry checked”, “Expiry dates” and “Proteins noted” and three more — so the sheet is already filled in for meal planning rather than left as blank rows to label yourself.
The remaining labels on the page are “Date” for the date label, “Kitchen Check” for the tracker heading and “What ingredient surprised you, and how did you use it today?” for the reflection prompt.
Two things about this particular three sections are settings rather than text, and “Cook From the Fridge Day” has them set like this. Tracker strip is on: include the eight-item tick-off strip. Reflection lines is on: include the two-line reflection at the foot.
Tips
Pull everything out of the fridge before writing anything down — items hidden at the back are the ones that get wasted.
Write the ingredient first, then the dish; this stops you defaulting to familiar recipes over what actually needs using.
If a protein appears in more than one section, note the portion size so you do not run short at dinner.
The other layouts in this set
“Cook From the Fridge Day” is one of three sheets in this set, each a different fixed layout filled for the same topic. “Weekly Meal Prep Day Planner” uses the time-blocked day layout and “Batch Cook Planning Day” uses the focus page layout. Pick by how you work: the layout decides how much you write and where, not what the sheet is about.
